ON THE LITERAL POWER OF RESTING 2022 was hard work. The year threw curveball after curveball that had me constantly ducking and weaving with what felt like only the occasional opportunity to hit a home run. I’ve spent the last few days taking time off to rest which for me means a deliberate slowing down. I thought I’d only need a few days off and would be back to a fully packed schedule by now. But the more I rest, the more I lean into my ‘Alpha brain waves’ (when you’re awake but not asking you brain to focus or concentrate on anything)Alpha brainwaves sit in the middle of the spectrum (fast & high functioning to slow and asleep) of brain waves. When our brains are producing these waves, we are in a restful state that can help to reduce stress, you feel calmer and research shows that this state of being will even increase creativity. So instead of bouncing straight back into work, I’ll be out here basking in my holographic puzzle obsession, dipping in & out of the ocean, eating chocolate for breakfast & pasta for lunch, reading, writing, enjoying guilt free day naps and watching the sunset and the moon rise.For me this time is sacred. It’s not often that I allow myself to fully indulge my ‘Alpha states’ for more than a day or two. I’ll be leaning into this deeply restful and restorative state and from here I’ll allow my subconscious mind to reveal my dreams, goals and intentions for 2023 from a place of creativity and recharged inspiration. Like my good friend reminds often —we have the power to be the alchemist of our own lives and are capable of transmuting our pain into our best creative work yet. (Check out our chat on the podcast, it’s fab) I hope you have the opportunity to rest, relax and reflect as well this time of year and remember that not all plans need to come from the conscious (high processing) brain waves.
