What does it take to move things forward? For tennis legend it means empowering the next generation of leaders to change the world. For King, her opportunity came with her now infamous 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” match against Bobby Riggs: “I knew [the match] was about social change,” she said in an interview at TEDWomen 2015, “And I was really nervous whenever we announced it, and I felt like the whole world was on my shoulders.” So, what inspired her to keep pushing forward — not just in her match against Riggs, but in subsequent years of advocacy for women’s rights in the US? The opportunity to shape a better future for the next generation. “We do stand on the shoulders of the people that came before us,” King reflected. “Every generation has the chance to make it better.” And if you think your voice is too small to make a difference, King has a message for you: “You out there listening, out there in the world ... every single person’s an influencer.
