Last Friday night my partner & I were walking the muggy streets of Sydney after dark. We were approached by a man who appeared to be sleeping rough. He asked us for cash, which I did not have on me. He continued to follow us implying he wasn’t giving up.We strolled a few steps and got to chatting. I asked him where he was from, his mob were from Stradbroke. A Murri brother and I, wondering on Gadigal Land far from home. I told him my mum grew up there but my mob is Guringai. We reminisced on the bright blue ocean and warmer summer nights. As we walked we bumped shoulders our steps in sync. Speaking as equals we shared our stories. Our paths eventually diverged but we left in a laughter, I turned to say goodbye as he reinstated his street position. My face wide with a smile as was his. I did not have cash but we chatted as humans. Honoured to join and (Meta) as a part of their First Nations Program. An opportunity to go deeper with my skillset and passion to share stories. Story telling has played a significant role in my life, from learning to captivate the audience at a family BBQ from a young age to soaking up the knowledge of mentors who have helped me to start my business. My next chapter aims to elevate the stories of our First Nations People. For over 60,000 years Indigenous people have shared their wisdom, knowledge and moral codes through oral storytelling, song, dance, art and ceremony. I aim to tell stories that promote diversity in the world of business and creative industries, that showcases the many pathways to success for all of those who dare to dream. The suppression of our people’s voices has resulted in the loss of unique points of view, creative expressions and innovative ideas. Until we are able to amplify these voices our community will be at a disadvantage. By showcasing role models we empower the next generation of First Nations creatives to navigate their way to the front. To reclaim their sense of identity & celebrate their stories and to sow seeds for generations to come. By elevating our First Nations people we perpetuate hope, healing and true reconciliation. Stay tuned for ‘When I Grow Up...’
