It’s widely recognized today that the society divides citizens based on income, education level, and job titles. But to be a fair and just country that lives up to the ideals around equal opportunity, we have to do something to address racial inequality, so that everyone has access to the education and training they need for good jobs.
Lumina Foundation’s Danette Howard knows this first-hand. When she was 6 months old, her mother decided to go back to school. Danette says the decision to be the first in your family to get a college degree changes not only your life, but everyone who comes after you. It took 10 years to get that degree, but because Danette’s mom was able to go back to school, her entire family had a better chance for success.
It's not enough that just some of have access to gaining these credentials. Everyone should have the opportunity to determine their best path, just like Danette's mother did. That's part of what drives Danette in her support of the Lumina goal of much wider educational attainment for the nation.
