Is sharing your personal political views in public worth the risk? If your stances are aligned with those of your customers, employees, or followers, taking a side is likely pretty harmless — and of course, if you feel strongly enough, moral considerations may outweigh strategic ones. But many leaders hesitate to take sides on controversial issues out of fear that speaking out might alienate people who disagree with them. While the desire to “stay out of it” is understandable, recent research suggests that this approach can backfire. A series of experiments with more than 4,000 participants across a wide variety of workplace contexts found that people tend to be more suspicious and less trusting of coworkers, managers, and public figures who decline to take sides than of those who openly express an opinion — even if it’s an opinion with which they disagree.Furthermore, conspicuously staying neutral can cause people to assume you’re trying to hide the fact that your views oppose those of whomever you are addressing (even if they don’t).Tap the link in our bio to learn more about the research.Adapted from "When Staying Neutral Backfires," by Ike Silver and Alex Shaw.
